On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Core Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
