Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
